As OTESSA finds new opportunities to advocate for our field and members in different contexts, whether regional, national, or international, we want to ensure that we are incorporating the views of our members. We want OTESSA to be more than a conference or a journal, we want to build community and to advocate for meaningful change. We have an opportunity to submit a pre-budget submission to the Canadian federal government (due August 6) and would like your input! This is an opportunity to influence the planned spending in the next federal budget. Please note that it is always helpful (but not required) to connect recommendations to specific federal Ministries<\/a> [website] and the mandate letters of their Ministers<\/a> [website].<\/p>\n

Please note that, while we want to consider the views of our members, we have also made the form inclusive of non-members as well, although we will review member submissions first. Given the timeline is short, please participate early and we will incorporate as much as we can. You are welcome to continue to submit after the submission deadline as we can always use your input in preparation for our submission next year as well. You do not have to be from Canada to submit your recommendations, especially if you have recommendations that have gained traction in other countries. Your ideas can be simple (more funding for A, more program seats in B, legislation around C, support for building out certification or infrastructure in D, etc.) or you may provide a polished paragraph to stand on its own in our submission as a recommendation bullet.<\/p>\n

Please note that the scope can be fairly large given the federal government has significant scope. That said, education (K12 or post-secondary) is a provincial mandate, so the federal government has no mandate to enforce provincial changes in education, however, they can provide legislation and funding around equity, access, and provide funding to support provincial governments in their provincial mandates. For example, see the August 2020 release announcing the federal government funding for provinces to support safety measures to address COVID-19 in K12 schools<\/a> [website]. Bill C-312 (an Act relating to cash contributions by Canada and to criteria and conditions in respect of post-secondary education)<\/a> [website] is also moving forward to connect conditions to cash contributions to provinces.
