Early Notice for Call for Presentations/Papers for #OTESSA22
OTESSA will be participating in the Congress 2022 conference of the Federation of the Social Sciences and Humanities. We just received official confirmation that it will be taking place ONLINE within the dates May 12-20, 2022. As we receive more information from the Federation, such as theme and confirming our conference dates within that window, we will be posting our Call for Presentations, but we will share some excerpts from our call information to assist with your planning.
We will be mounting a fresh conference system, so please stay tuned, but use this time to plan your submission. Watch also for our first issue of the OTESSA Journal to be published shortly. Please note this conference is being planned in collaboration with the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education (CSSHE) and Open/Technology in Education, Society, and Scholarship Association (OTESSA) so that individuals attending one of these conferences will also have the opportunity to attend sessions at the other gatherings; however, the individual(s) presenting must have a current OTESSA membership to be included in the program, when announced in the Spring. OTESSA memberships expire December 31 of each year.
Please note OTESSA is partnering with the Canadian Society for Studies in Education (CSSE), so that individuals attending the OTESSA conference will also have the opportunity to attend CSSE sessions and vice versa; however, individual(s) presenting must have a current membership to be included in an association’s program, when announced in the Spring. OTESSA memberships expire December 31 of each year.
Deadline for Submissions: December 15, 2021
Submission information:
- An abstract (max 200 words) to be entered in a field separate from the submission document;

OR - A full paper for publication as part of the OTESSA Journal (see journal submission guidelines)
- A short paper for publication as part of the OTESSA 2022 proceedings (up to 2000 words, excluding references/appendices)
Eligibility
Active membership is not required at the time of submission. Presenters must be a member of OTESSA, must register for the conference, and be prepared to attend their conference session. Memberships expire December 31 of each year. Note: you may select non-member registration within the Congress conference registration system to select a registration that includes 2021 membership.
Presenters are allowed to be first author or sole presenter TWICE for the entire OTESSA conference. Additional participation as co-authors not presenting as sole presenter is allowed. Note that this limit does NOT apply to individuals who are presenting at other association conferences at Congress (e.g., CSSE, CSSHE, etc.). For example, you may present at CSSE according to their presenters guidelines and then present at OTESSA as per our presenter guidelines. All authors and presenters MUST be listed on your OTESSA submission. This enables us to identify and trouble-shoot conflicts at an early stage. If an author appears on a number of submissions as co-author, we will only ensure no conflict occurs for two sessions.
Criteria for Evaluation
Regardless of presentation format chosen, all authors may self-select one of the following two types of submission for their work: “research-oriented” or “practice-oriented” with the following criteria for each:
Research-Oriented
- Significance to the field, to practice, to society, to OTESSA mission/focus
- Clarity (of objectives or purpose, of writing, of arguments, etc)
- Situatedness (i.e. has the author situated their work in the broader research literature, provided perspective(s) or theoretical framework)
- Substantiated conclusions and/or recommendations
- Methodological and analytic rigour as required by the inquiry approach employed
Practice-Oriented
- Significance to the field, to practice, to society, to OTESSA mission/focus
- Clarity (of objectives or purpose, of writing, of arguments, etc.)
- Situatedness (i.e. has the author situated their work in the broader context of similar work conducted by others)
- Substantiated conclusions, and/or recommendations
Open Access Policy
All authors who opt into and are accepted for short and full papers agree to release their articles under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license.
Official Language
The official language of OTESSA is English, however, submissions can be accepted in either English or French, which are the official languages of Canada. The program indicates the languages of presentation and discussion. In any given session, the title reflects the language of presentation. OTESSA supports the practice of bilingual presentations for the official languages of Canada (French and English) and Indigenous languages (e.g., a presenter speaks in one language while the slides are in the other language; co-presenters each speaking one language; or a bilingual facilitator helping translate the Q&A session).
A bilingual session is defined as one in which presentations and discussions occur in either French or English, along with support in the other language. Discussion moves freely between the two languages, French and English.
The OTESSA Executive will make a reasonable effort to ensure public communications are available in both official Canadian languages and any additional languages. Please note, however, that our ability to meet these needs is expected to grow as we grow as a community and organization. We are attuned to the history of the denial of language in the oppression of marginalized groups and, where possible, will make a reasonable effort to translate into additional languages as well. The OTESSA Executive will determine when and how translations between the languages will be provided.
