Free Learning: From Disruption and Digital Access to AI Fluency
eCampusOntario is at the forefront of innovation in education, connecting learners, institutions and employers to increase digital participation in education and the economy. Higher education in Ontario and Canada continues to experience significant disruptions, mirroring the disruptions the economy is facing due to international trade and tariffs. Within this context, digital by design options for leanring are even more important to ensure our public higher education system remains a vital component of helping to create a resilient society and economy. These digital options include Open Educational Resources and Micro-Credentials. There is significant potential in lagging Open Education and micro-learning that will help ensure all citizens are able to access key skills and competencies. This is especially true with the need for AI Fluency.
eCampusOntario has created models for combining Open Education and micro-learning that provides learners with free learning pathways to essential skills development focused on increasing access to education amidst economic disruption while providing education institutions with new opportunities to design, develop and deliver education to a fast-changing population. The result is better learner access and credit and labour mobility, more effective program response to changes in educational demand, and better integration of innovations such as work integrated learning within the wider education system.
Biography
Robert Luke, PhD, is Chief Executive Officer of eCampusOntario, which supports innovation, collaboration and digital by design education in Ontario’s 58 colleges, Indigenous institutes, and universities. eCampusOntario builds bridges between education and employment by supporting Ontario’s learners to find the programs they need for the careers they want; enabling member institutions to embrace the future of teaching and learning with virtual, hybrid, & experiential learning that empowers people with options; and connecting Ontario’s campuses to employers for collaborative innovation.
